David Wallace, Front end Web Developer.
It's been a while since my last website update, the last time I did I had just left London. Well, I have been hard at work for a long time since then contracting in Wellington (NZ).
Most of my good old work is still on this site, though the content is pending an update as I've worked on a number of educational projects, and a handful of others - mostly all rich media with Flash, XML and JavaScript.
The work you'll find here has been created with programs I use on a day-to-day basis including Flash, Photoshop and Dreamweaver as my preferred file management tool. I'm comfortable working on both Windows and Mac platforms. Please note, I've tried to provide two URLs for websites I've created; one is the current, live (client maintained) site if available and the second link is my local version of the site before it was handed over to the client.
Thank you for taking the time to view my work.
Saab - V6 Aero
Agency: Draft FCB
Background:
As with many of Saab's html emails, the 9-3 Aero V6 Range is a short summary of Saab's best upcoming deals with the latest product imagery combined to form a professional, database-managed email advertisement.
Saab email and flash campaigns are deployed through a third party company, a template based spec sheet, provided by the ad host, had to be followed to ensure maximum results.
This email links to the related product landing page, to further entice potential test-drivers and of course, buyers.
Teacher Development Agency (TDA) - Physics
Agency: Draft FCB
Background:
The £150 Training Bursary campaign is made up of a number of skill enhancing offers sent via email to TDA's database-managed audience. This piece is aimed at the Physics arena in particular, a clear and concise point is made with these emails, simplified by having only one call to action - www.teach.gov.uk.
As with many html emails the battle for lower file size has been kept in mind at all times, for the most part all header graphics and .gif animations are kept below 35kb.
Coded using tabled layout, ever so slightly deprecated tags, dropping all meta data and any semblance of decent CSS - all to make sure hotmail, yahoo, google and outlook play nicely.
Xbox Live - Monthly Update
Agency: Wunderman Interactive
Background:
For a period of about 3 months I worked solely on Xbox Live emails and creatives, coming to terms quickly with a brand focussed on gamers.
I built a series of monthly update templates, where any basic photoshopper might cut out some new graphics, then add some text and voi la! You now have your new monthly Xbox newsletter.
I accidentally created half a years worth of templates, translated into 8 languages, in 2 days - nice way to put myself out of a job!
Constructed using similar legacy code to all of my 'standards conforming' html emails, these updates were released to such a high quantity of users that everything from expanding text to Netscape 4.x users had to be accomodated for.
MSN Hotmail Update
Agency: Wunderman Interactive
Background:
Microsoft! Perhaps I should've made a few mistakes on this one...
But I didn't, being such an important client these creatives went through 2 rounds of QA before being sent to Microsoft for sign-off. Complying to all available, safe email guidelines and Microsoft's documentation, these Hotmail Updates are robust and adaptable.
Again tabled layout, fairly unimportant link:hover inline styles and deprecated code have been used to comply to guidelines, file size for these emails was 50kb (that's code + images, ouch).
Seeing as how Microsoft is everywhere, when I was offered this brief I quickly came to understand just how many language translated versions would be needed...
